Rwanda: Kicking for Reconciliation

In one month, so many men, women and boys were killed in the Rwandan genocide that the average age in Rwanda was just 18 years old. So it was up to the women, youth and orphans to take the lead to rebuild this small central African country again.

Ten years later, the girls of the 1994 genocide are growing up, and they need the tools to overcome the past and to make the most of their dreams and talents. Women without Borders is supporting the young female teenagers as they prepare for their future roles as professionals, managers, and leaders of a peaceful and prosperous Rwanda.

of the South-Indian Tsunami-hit region.

Although living next to the sea, many girls and women in South India do not know how to swim. OXFAM International reports that the catastrophic tsunami that affected South Asia in December 26, 2004 claimed the lives of three times as many women than men. This is because in these coastal regions, women and children often remain at home and are not expected to go out into the water.

The room is decorated with trophies and medals. Almost like a museum. In the middle of all that, a couch and a girl with a smiling face. Ankita Bhambri, 20. tennis player. New Delhi, India. Tanned. Broad shouldered and it is possible to see her muscles waiting to explode through her jeans. The third best female tennis player in the country, and part of the exclusive league of top 300 players in the world. Firstly, obviously – why tennis ? ‘‘I have been playing since I was 6. I don’t quite remember. My parents put me in it. At 6, I used to play for about 15 minutes a day. By the time I was 7 I could play for an hour at a stretch. At 8 I started playing matches. By 10, I had beaten all the girls in my age group in Delhi and since then there has been no looking back.’’
