Bertha von Sutter

Bertha von SutterDown with Arms!

"We must defend ourselves against injustice - once it is recognized as such, there is no choice. Silence , although it pretends to express disdain, is itself disdainable. Not only the directly affected one must react; also the outsiders must rise against injustice whenever they see it. Their silence is co-guilt and usually is due to the same motives as the silence of the victims, namely anxiousness. Don't rock the boat... don't get into trouble, this is the basic motive, even though it externally acts as if it were noble reserve""

Bertha von Sutter Nobel Peace Prize for 1905

A young woman of the Viennese aristocracy, Bertha von Sutter wrote Down with Arms! in 1889 against the backdrop of the European wars.
